Government Relations

For three decades EFTA has provided its members with a chance to help shape the laws and regulations that govern the electronic payments industry.

EFTA knows that most lawmakers and regulators are genuinely interested in learning about the technical and operational consequences of proposed laws or regulations. Congress and the administrative agencies, as well as the media and state agencies, all call on EFTA regularly to discuss the impact of potential laws or policies.

The key to EFTA’s government-relations success has been its credibility with Congress and the regulatory agencies. In fact, agencies often request to meet with EFTA on contentious issues, knowing the Association’s reputation for credibility and fairness.

Since 1977 EFTA has fought for its members on a variety of issues. These have included ATM surcharging, interchange, the Americans with Disabilities Act, Regulation E coverage, and ATM fraud and data security. When laws or regulations are proposed, EFTA serves as an early warning system for its members on issues that can affect their business.
